Find the best spot for your router.

WiFi Survey measures your Wi-Fi while you walk around your home, ranks every spot you name, and tells you which access point is responsible for the bad ones. No guessing at signal bars.

A signal bar tells you almost nothing.

iOS does not hand apps the raw signal strength, and even where a number is available it is a poor predictor. Wi-Fi hides a weakening link behind link-layer retransmission: the round trip to your router stays low right up until the connection collapses all at once.

So WiFi Survey ignores signal strength entirely and measures the things that degrade early — then folds them into a single score from 0 to 100 you can compare across spots.

What it measures

Six signals, weighted. If one cannot be read on your network its weight is redistributed across the rest rather than silently scoring zero.

Large frame loss

Corruption probability grows with frame length, so 1400-byte packets start failing long before small ones do.

TCP error rate

Retransmitted and out-of-order bytes as the kernel sees them, plus the ratio of connections that never establish.

Tail latency

Retransmission inflates the extremes, not the median. The 95th percentile moves while the average still looks fine.

Throughput

As the link weakens the radio drops to a slower modulation. That shows up as rate long before the connection breaks.

PHY mode

An ax → n downshift is discrete and unambiguous: the radio itself has admitted the link got worse.

Outage

Every ping lost and no TCP connection completed. Past the edge of coverage, recorded as its own state.

Pressing the button freezes the ten seconds leading up to the press, so the time you spend standing still typing a name never gets folded into the measurement.

The network identity is captured on every sample, so the report can attribute each part of your walk to the access point that actually served it.

The per-access-point section ranks your nodes by average score and lists the spots each one covered. That is the view that answers the real question: not "is my Wi-Fi bad", but which node do I move.

Nothing leaves your network.

Every packet the app sends is addressed to your own router. There are no accounts, no analytics, and no servers to upload to. Recordings live on your iPhone until you delete them.

The app asks for location permission only because iOS refuses to reveal the Wi-Fi network name to an app that does not hold it. Your location is never read, stored, or transmitted.

Honest limits

Things worth knowing before you buy into the numbers.

The screen has to stay on

iOS does not permit Wi-Fi sampling in the background. If the app is backgrounded, recording pauses and says so.

Throughput is relative, not a speed test

The measurement is capped by your router's own admin server, so it compares spots within one home. It is not an internet speed figure and does not compare across recordings.

Battery use is noticeable

Measurement is deliberately continuous and heavy. Expect real drain, and a warm phone on a long walk.

Spots are named by hand

Indoor GPS is not accurate enough to place a measurement in a room, so you label the places yourself. Measurement targets the IPv4 gateway.
